PEOPLE
The number of people you have added to MANGO. Think of this as the number of professional relationships you are creating.
Activity: MANGO counts each time you do an act to seek support, help others, and show gratitude. Every bit counts! Be proud.
GIVING Activities:
SEEKING Activities:
"Hello Paul,"
Common practice is to address someone by their first name only. An
exception is using a title like Dr., Rabbi, Professor, Judge, or Officer
and last name.
"As you may know, I am a student at Ridgeview University, 2017, majoring in Anthropology with an interest in social entrepreneurship."
"As you may know, I am a graduate of Ridgeview University, 2013, and am currrently an art instructor at Middleview Elementary School."
You can add double majors, minors, concentrations, or other areas of interest that apply. It is helpful to let your contact know what you are most interested in so that they can help you find opportunities that align with your goals.
Depending on your preference, you can list either the organization you work for or your industry/field.
"Besides my work, I am passionate about skiing and cross country ski races."
"Besides being a student, I am passionate about skiing and cross country ski races."
"Besides my work, I am passionate about skiing and cross country ski races."
"Besides being a veterinarian, I am passionate about painting with oils."
"Besides being a student, I am passionate about skiing and cross country ski races."
Your contact wants to get to know you.
Sharing something about yourself shows your contact that you’re a person, not a robot.
Examples:
"Jason Jackson, my friend, suggested I reach out to you. Like you, I am the first of my family to graduate college."
"Jason Jackson, my friend, suggested I reach out to you. Like you, I am the first of my family to attend college."
Always mention your referral first and then add other commonalities.
It’s powerful to mention a unique experience or situation that you both share, if applicable.
"I am searching for job opportunities related to account management and business development in the software industry."
This sentence helps your contact know what you are trying to do. Make sure it is clear and specific.
For Job Seekers: Starting with "I am searching..." tells your contact what phase you are currently in. If you are interested in a specific position or company that's related to your contact, include that here.
Job Searching Examples:
Guide "Given your recent experience, I thought you might have some practical advice and knowledge of the hiring process that would help me."
Advisor "Given your extensive experience, I thought you might have some industry knowledge and connections that would help me in setting a direction for my job search."
Supporter "Given our similar experience, I thought you might have some guidance and could recommend resources that would help me accomplish my goal."
Connector "I would love to learn about your career experiences and see what advice or ideas may be relevant to me."
This statement helps your contact know that you understand what they have to offer. Edit the statement if you have a more specific need in mind.
"Would you be willing to have a 30-minute conversation with me in the next two weeks to share your thoughts?"
This is a clear, specific ask. Underline this sentence so it is easy for your contact to see when skimming your message. Professionals generally schedule in 30-minute increments, so feel free to request this amount of time.
People want a deadline to help them prioritize your request. Give them a specific deadline or default to "within the next two weeks."
"Ideally I would love to meet you in-person, at your office or perhaps you could suggest a nearby coffee shop. I will be coming from the west metro area. Otherwise, I am happy to call you if you can provide a number or you could call me at my phone number below."
"I am happy to call you if you can provide a number otherwise you could call me at my phone number below."
You are inviting the conversation so it is your job to setup the meeting, and figure out the logistics. Conversations are best in person and coffee shops feel more casual than an office setting. Offering to come to the office may also be convenient and give you a feel for their organization. Your contact will often want to suggest a location that works well for both of you so mentioning where you are traveling from helps them.
You are inviting the conversation so it is your job to setup the meeting, figure out the logistics, and initiate the phone call, if possible.
"To make it easier, I have listed some times or invite you to suggest a time that works better for you."
Offer several available blocks of time over the next week or so, beginning at least three days from now. Use bullet points. When you provide times, remember to allow enough time for you to get settled in a private space for a phone call or to travel to an offsite location.
The more variety of options you provide, the better chance you have of getting a conversation scheduled immediately. One suggestion is to offer an early morning option (7:30AM – 9:00AM), a lunchtime option (11AM – 1PM), and an after work option (5PM – 8PM) across several days.
"I know you are busy so I will check back in a few days, if I don’t hear from you sooner. I have attached my resume below."
You are the conversation host so it is considerate to follow up. If you say you are attaching your resume, remember to attach if as a PDF to the email before sending. Use a descriptive file name like "Tawanna Liu Resume.pdf."
"Thank you so much, Paul. I look forward to connecting with you!"
Thank them by name – it feels more personal. And finish off with an enthusiastic remark and an exclamation point! That shows you are excited and interested in them.
